3 Tips for Designing the Best Fit-Out for Your Small Retail Space

When you have a small retail space for your business, how you design it ultimately affects customer flow. A space that looks crowded can turn customers away and hurt your business. This is why you need to pay attention to the fit-out design you choose. In this case, your primary role should be to maximise the available space while making your premises look big and welcoming. But how do you achieve this with limited square footage? Here are three tips to help you design the perfect fit-out for your small business premises.

Create an Illusion of Space

Since there's no way of getting additional space for your store, you need to engage your creativity by creating the illusion of space. Make your retail shop look bigger than it is by using mirrors and colours. Mirrors create the illusion of depth and bounce light into the room, making the space look larger than it is. Incorporate as many mirrors as possible into your fit-out design.

Also, use white paint as opposed to dark clours. White reflects light and makes a room seem larger. Finally, go for light-coloured or polished floors. Again, light, polished floors also bounce light across the room and create an illusion of depth.

Optimise Vertical Space

Make maximum use of the available vertical space in your store. Doing so will free up the floor space and make your store look less cramped. What's more, it also allows you to create long aisles for your customers. Incorporate wall shelving and wall displays into your design.

Of course, make it as practical as possible based on the products you're selling. For example, if you sell beauty products, using wall displays would be easier. However, if you sell clothes, you may have to be a little creative to ensure customers can still access the merchandise.

Take Advantage of Natural and Artificial Lighting

Adequate lighting can make a small retail shop look suddenly bigger and more visually appealing. Thus, your design should allow you to take advantage of as much natural lighting as possible. Use a glass door as opposed to a solid one as this will allow lots of light into the space. Also, add as many windows as you can. If your store's position doesn't allow much light in, take advantage of artificial lighting. These will not only light up the room but also add visual elements, especially if you go for appealing light fixtures.

Having a small retail store doesn't mean you can't make it look bigger. Work with your shop fit-out consultant to incorporate these tips into your design and create a spacious store that will attract customers!
